چکیده

We provide the observed cell counts of the three-way mobility tables for men and women below. We also provide the R codes for fitting the models reported in the paper. Individual level data, from which the mobility tables are derived, are available from the following sources. The data of the National Survey for Health and Development can be obtained from the UK Medical Research Council, http://nshd.mrc.ac.uk. The data of the other two birth cohort studies, i.e. the National Child Development Study and the British Cohort Study are available from the UK Data Archive: http://www.data-archive.ac.uk.

The Grandparents Effect in Social Mobility: Evidence from British Birth Cohort

Using data from three British birth cohort studies, we examine patterns of social mobility over three generations of family members. For both men and women, absolute mobility rates (i.e., total, upward, downward, and outflow mobility rates) in the partial parents-children mobility tables vary substantially by grandparents’ social class. In terms of relative mobility patterns, we find a statisti...

The effects of grandparents on children's schooling: evidence from rural China.

The issue of whether the social class of grandparents affects grandchildren's socioeconomic outcomes net of the characteristics of the middle generation is much debated in the social mobility literature. Using data from the 2002 Chinese Household Income Project, we investigate the direct effects of grandparents on grandchildren's educational attainment in rural China. We find that the influence...

Social Mobility Over Three Generations in Finland: A Critique∗

Erola and Moisio (2007) argue that in Finland the class positions of grandparents and grandchildren are almost independent of each other, once parents’ social class has been taken into account. We show that this conclusion of ‘almost conditional independence’ is actually not supported by the results reported in their paper. We further show that the strong evidence against conditional independen...
